1. How did you find yourself in a twelve step program?

I had accepted for a while that I had a drinking problem, that I was an alcoholic. But it wasn't until I realized how much the alcohol was taking over my life, that I got serious about getting into recovery. At that point I threw my fears to the wind, and walked into my first face to face AA meeting. It was an experience I will never forget. The support there was wonderful. It was the helping hand I needed. I knew then that I was not alone. As I approach three months of sobriety, I have spent time in self reflection, figuring out what provides me with the most strength. I have come to the conclusion that the thirteen statements of Women For Sobriety fit me better than the 12 steps of AA. Because I continue to benefit from the experiences shared, and messages of hope given, I still believe AA is a powerful tool in recovery and consider myself a hybrid between AA and WFS. I make my own recovery by gathering what works for me from each program, and work it one day at a time.

2. What were you seeking when you joined SoberMoms?

Although I already post on an active sobriety site online, I was interested in finding an additional source of support, made up of mothers like me. Moms who understand. I thought the idea of an online community of women in my position would be a great addition to the programs I have been working.

3. How did you become a moderator?

I was asked to be a moderator because I post frequently on the site. I happily obliged, and enjoy it very much.

4. Do you find this a good source of service work and how has it been beneficial to your recovery?

The rewards are many. It helps me to help others. If I can help one person stay sober for one day, then I have done my job. I want to give back to others who are struggling, in return for the sobriety I now enjoy. Each and every story I read reinforces my desire to stay sober, and I hope in my response I am helping someone else.

5. What suggestions (if any) would you give to someone who may be considering joining an online recovery forum for support?

I would like to tell anyone pondering the idea of joining an online recovery community that doing so has been more beneficial to me than I could have imagined. It is there when I need it, no matter what time of day or night. If someone is nervous, lurk a while before posting to get a feel for the site and the members. When feeling comfortable make a post of introduction. Choose to remain anonymous or not; it's all up to the individual. I highly recommend it. It can be a wonderful tool.
